It's been a while since I looked at the demos, but I've just opened up thebasic demo_Terrain, demo_SimpleMotion, and also the demo_SSMP, and they all seem to have the same problem. Shift-W doesn't run any faster than walking without Shift.
I haven't looked into the reasons why yet, but just wanted to mention it FYI.

Okay, silly me. I neglected to read the readme file, which clearly states that I'm supposed to "Select the PlayerBot and press 'Setup Input Entries' on the MC". Having done that, shift-to-run works great! Sorry for the red herring.
